Albertina Walker: Queen of Gospel

Meet Albertina Walker, hailed as the Queen of Gospel. For you gospel music fans, you know her as one of the most influential singers to the genre So to hear news that Walker was on her death bed had people saddened. Today via Twitter the rumors were circulating that Albertina had died. So did she die or was it just a big rumor? Read more and see photos of the legend here.

Albertina Walker was born in 1929 in the Midwestern city of Chicago, Illinois. Walker was first influenced by music at the age of four. Not only did she start singing in her church choir at the West Point Baptist Church, but her involvement with the church was the start of her pursuit of a professional singing career.

At the age of 21, Walker started her own group called the Caravans. Throughout her musical journey with her group, she also sought out and launched the careers of many famous gospel singers including Pastor Shirley Caesar, Inez Andrews, Delores Washington, Cassietta George, Dorothy Norwood and Reverend James Cleveland.

Albertina and her group achieved great success but it was in 1975 that Walker decided to branch out on her own. She started off her solo career with a project called Put A Little Love In Your Heart. Walker created over 60 albums and had many hits that gave her worldwide recognition. Not only that but Albertina was awarded a Grammy award in 1995 and an additional ten Grammy nominations.

Today the rumor that Walker had passed circulated via Twitter and we are hearing that the rumor is false. Walker is however in the ICU where she is trying to recover. Our thoughts go out to her and her family!
