Harvey Keitel: The Office’s Replacement for Steve Carrell?

September 3, 2010

Whispers around Hollywood are pointing to an unlikely replacement for Steve Carrell on NBC’s hit comedy: Harvey Keitel. The Office’s central character has been Michael Scott, played by Carrell, and the actors departure will leave some giant shoes to fill. Check out the full story, with pictures and video below!

Entering its seventh season this year, Carrell has confirmed that this year will be his last on the show. Have no fear though, the producers aren’t looking to replace Mike’s character with a similar figure.

“I haven’t started any talks with his people, but Harvey would do a great job — a very different energy,” says Paul Lieberstein who plays Toby and serves as a producer for the show. “And we don’t want to bring in another Michael, having someone play a very similar character because we have such a high regard for Steve.”

For Harvey Keitel, The Office could be the 71 year old actor’s big chance at comedy TV. Showing talent in a few smaller comedy stints, the actor has enough credo to warrant Steve Carrell even asking for him as a replacement.

“Keitel is probably the only guy who can do it, and he’s doing TV now … That’s what a very smart/eager man once called a ‘win-win-win,’” says Lieberstein. “He’s a real tough guy, but I saw him in ‘Life on Mars’ and I saw a lot more comedy in his work, just little slivers of it, little things he would do that made me think he’s capable of a lot more than what (he’s done).”

While it’s tough to picture the classic comedy without the comedic stylings of Carrell, the cast certainly has enough talent to carry the show anyway. That said, how on earth would the producers introduce the aging character into the tight knit group?

“He’s an old salesman who thought he could retire and the stock market went down, and he has to come out of retirement to work for a few years,” Lieberstein explained.

Well, there you have it. What do you think of the idea of introducing Harvey Keitel? The Office hasn’t had to lose any big characters during its existence. Will it survive? Let me know what you think in the comment section! And don’t miss the pictures and video on the show below!
