Ashlea Monigatti is in the news this week after she was reportedly barred from the catwalk on Australia’s Next Top Model for being too big. Get the unbelievable story here, and see photos and video below.

We’ve all heard of this sort of thing before—a girl whom most reasonable people would consider “thin” is shunned by the high fashion world. But this particular story has a nasty edge to it being that it is all part of a reality TV show.

By now it’s become cliché to rail against the fashion industry for favoring skeleton-like models. The real culprit, though, are the designers who refuse to create clothing for anyone other than size ‘0’ girls. That appears to be the case in this story as well.

Ashlea Monigatti is a contestant on the current season of Australia’s Next Top Model. According to the Daily Mail, she and the other models were set to participate in a parade as part of Australian Fashion Week in Sydney. The shoot was to be called the Catwalk Challenge, and would feature all 16 contestants in selected outfits strutting their stuff at the prestigious event.

Ashlea says she had never considered her weight a problem until she began to prepare for the event. Here are her measurements: 32-inch chest, a 25-inch waist, and 34-inch hips.

Rather than give her a chance, the judges decided she wouldn’t even fit into the clothing and told her she would have to sit on the sidelines:

“It was a bit unfair because they didn’t even let me try the clothes on … they just looked at me and said I was too big.”

Naturally, those involved with the show defended their actions, calling it a “realistic view of the industry.”

Sadly, they’re right. The industry really is part of a dangerous machine that drives many young women into eating disorders. If that’s the realistic view they are going for, then kudos to them.

Check out a video of Ashlea Monigatti below. You can see a pic of her here. Do you think she is too ‘big’ for Australia’s Next Top Model?

she is a beautiful young girl, with an amazing body, i would much rather have a body like hers, compared to all the other girls. Doesn’t anyone else care how this girl might feel about herself at the moment? How has this affected her self esteem now?
I hope she goes well in the competition, she deserves to
