George Steinbrenner

Yankees owner George Steinbrenner has died. The man behind the greatest team in baseball, yes I am a fan and that is my opinion, is dead at the age of 80. His death was announced his morning by team officials. George’s death comes right on the heels of the death of the teams legendary announcer “the Voice of God” Bob Shepard.

George’s reign over the team took place in 1973 and he turned the struggling team around. It was his leadership that made the team into not only a winning team but a championship team. Since he took over the team has won 11 pennants and 7 World Series. Yes he made them as great as they were back in the day of Mantle and Maris.

The Ohio born Steinbrenner came from a shipping family meaning his family owned and operated Kinsman Shipping which hauled grain on the Great Lakes. After attending Williams College, spending some time in the Air Force and doing post graduate work at Ohio State University he joined the family business in 1957.

His first venture into sports came when he bought into the Cleveland Pipers basketball team which at the time were a part of the no longer existing ABL.The team folded during season two and George and his partners lost a lot of money. After that venture went south he turned his focus to Broadway investing in shows like the Seesaw which was actually 1974 Tony Award for Best Musical.

Steinbrenner married to Elizabeth Joan Zieg in 1956 and the couple has four children Hank, Hal, Jessica, and Jennifer.

New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner is dead after suffering a massive heart attack. It is s sad day for fans of the Bronx Bombers and New Yorkers are already reeling from the news of Steinbrenner’s death.
