In this day in age, talent doesn’t always equal money. I hate to say it, but just give a quick listen to any Top 40 radio station, and after you’re done vomiting, you’ll know exactly what I mean.

Regardless, there is such a thing as ‘the music business,’ and in that strange, unpredictable world there are some powerhouses.

Let’s take a quick look at the rundown of Billboard’s Top 40 Money Makers of 2009 (full list). I’ve also included how much they made, you know, just to make us everyday folks inadequate.

Wow. You have to admire some of the older artists / bands on there that are still raking it in. A few that pop out are Tina Turner, Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, AC/DC, Metallica (yes they’ve been recording for 27 years), Paul McCartney, and Bob Dylan.

The top 10 is interesting and diverse. I’m a major Coldplay fan—in my opinion they are one of the few newer bands that are helping to keep music alive. The Jonas Brothers are banking for sure, but it’s safe to say most of that is coming from kids begging their parents to take them to shows (hey, whatever works).

Were there any surprising on the list for you? Personally I was shocked to see Nickelback so high up there. Yes, they have some catchy songs, but sheesh, #12?!
