Brighton Beach: The Russian Jersey Shore?

February 28, 2010

Have you heard about Brighton Beach, the Russian Jersey Shore? A producer is apparently cooking up a new version of the reality show set Brooklyn.

You better watch out, your ethnic group might be the next one to be caricatured on reality television. Even after Italian-American interest groups assailed the Jersey Shore, a woman is apparently working on yet another show, this time with its sights set on Russian-Americans.

A producer named Elina Miller is reportedly planning to follow the spray tan soaked trail of MTV’s uber-popular series. Her plan is to focus on an area of Brooklyn known for its sizable Russian population. Though she claims she will not be zeroing in on stereotypes, the casting call tells a different story.

Here is part of her plea to find cast members for what I’m unofficially naming ‘Brighton Beach: The Russian Jersey Shore’—

“Are you the Russian Snooki or The Situation? Are you a super outgoing and fun-loving Russian-American that sometimes sneaks kalbaska, pel’meni and vodka from the fridge? Can people hear the Euro/Techno/Russian music blasting from your car before they see you pull up? … The cameras will roll as you do what you do best—eat, drink and PARTY.”

Wow, doesn’t that read more like an ad for one of those scammer ‘modeling agencies’ who actually make YOU pay? Anyway, it gets better:

“Here’s who we’re looking for: Outgoing guys and girls between the ages of 21 and 30 who would be willing to spend one summer living in an all-expense paid digs in the New York City area and consider themselves to be Russian-American (or from the former U.S.S.R, including the Caucasus). We’re searching for people throughout the entire U.S. including: NYC, Miami, Cleveland, Chicago, L.A., San Francisco and beyond. You must love attention and be the opposite of camera-shy…..”

Sadly, I don’t think she’ll have any trouble at all hunting down enough kids to put together a show.

The real question is, will people actually tune in to watch it? Would you?
