Holly Robinson Peete: John Mayer ‘Drop The Frat Boy Act’

February 13, 2010

Holly Robinson Peete, John Mayer, and the ‘N’ word—oh my! The actress’ opinion about the lanky guitarist has been in flux this week, but why?

It all started with a misunderstanding – Peete managed to catch wind of just a small part of a Playboy interview in which he called her ‘gorgeous.’ Being that John has been known to comingle with some much-desired female celebs, the comment naturally flattered her.

She then went to E! and apparently told them that she was just plain tickled by what he said…that is until she read the entire piece. You know, the one about his wang that has left him buried under a dog pile of disgusted celebs, the weightiest of which is Roger Ebert (sorry ‘Rog).

So Holly Robinson Peete reached up, pulled her foot out of her mouth, did a nice public relations pirouette, and this time chose People Magazine as her outlet of choice.

Here’s what she had to say about John Mayer (even after he apologized):

“It’s time for him to really just drop the frat boy act and take responsibility for everything that he said…Is it possible to say something racially charged, bigoted and flat out ignorant and not be a racist person? That’s the question…But I don’t know if he understands how much he hurt black women’s feelings.”

Wow. She put about half a dozen verbal Chinese stars in his back with that one.

I must say that I never-ever-ever put up with this kind of thing. There really is no such thing as a socially acceptable, casual racist comment. Regardless of how he may have meant it, it was a major misstep for a guy who has a diverse fan base.

The only thing that can be said in his defense, is that he was obviously joking—and plenty comedians spew racially insensitive garbage for a living. With that said, check your tongue next time dude.

What do you think about the whole Holly Robinson Peete, John Mayer issue?
