I’ve always attributed Dave’s broad appeal to his humble persona. The band’s ability to move records and sell out venues without massive radio play speaks volumes about their grass roots following. So when I heard that DMB was set to be a major staple in this year’s list of performers, I felt a tinge of relief.

It will be a nice departure from the recent focus on larger than life personalities to see musicianship return to the stage—and that’s exactly what the performance promises.

A small army of young musicians has been assembled to perform with DMB tonight, all 16-year-old students chosen from a program called ‘Grammy in the Schools.’

As Dave told MTV News:

“We’ve got a bunch of people to sing and just some awesome players. We have 45 people up there…Everybody is playing, and that’s a big part for me. Everybody is playing. There’s nobody up there faking it.”

The ensemble will be made up of strings, brass, percussion, and vocalists, and is said to also include some African style drumming. The massive collabo will tackle the song ‘You and Me’ from the band’s latest record ‘Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King,’ which was nominated for Album of the Year.

I’m looking forward to seeing how this one will turn out. The band’s eclectic mix of instrumentation is what defines them, but I must say I’ve never seen them backed by a small orchestra, or a chorus. I’m sure LeRoi Moore will be smiling down on them tonight.
