According to reports, Mike Penner, 52, was found dead in his Los Angeles apartment. An autopsy is underway and will confirm the cause of death, however, it is believed to be a suicide related incident.
As a biography, not much is known about Mike Penner. He was born on October 10, 1957 so his age is 52. He wrote for the sports column for the Los Angeles Times. On April 26, 2007 he proclaimed himself as a transsexual and identified his name as Christine Daniels from October of 2007 to March of 2008 but later switched back to his given name. Penner was found dead in his Los Angeles apartment on November 28, 2009 possibly due to an alleged suicide.
On Friday, a Los Angeles County coroner pronounced the transsexual sports reporter dead at Brotman Medical Center in Culver City, California. The manner of death is yet to be confirmed.
The Los Angeles Times Editor Russ Stanton said, “Mike was a first-rate journalist, a valued member of our staff for 25 years, and we will miss him,” expressing that, “He respected our readers a great deal, enough to share with them his very personal journey. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”
Penner worked for The Times for a reported 25 years plus. He has covered stories relating to MLB, NFL, Olympics, Tennis, World Cup Soccer, and a number of other sports. He was known for his humor and ability to adapt to various news stories.
It is said that his column via the Los Angeles Time’s website, became one of the most popular on the web and his work was often talked about on sports radio broadcasts.
Mike came forward revealing his sexual transformation publicly and considered his announcement the most troublesome declaration he had to endure. During this time, he was apparently married but denied comment of his personal marital affairs. He underwent female hormone treatments and planned to undergo a sex change.
November 15, 2009 is the transsexual sports reporter’s last written column in the Los Angeles Times.
