The modern history of Thanksgiving traces back in history to the Pilgrims who arrived in America in December, 1619. They faced a terribly difficult first winter and in the springtime first met Indians in the New World.
The American Indians showed them how to plant corn using fish and generally welcomed the newcomers. Two years later in the fall after the second harvest, the Indians and Pilgrims gathered together in a show of friendship and Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving today traces back to that first feast.
