Roman Polanski, 76, has been granted bail for a reported $4.5 million in a Swiss Federal Criminal Court.
As a biography, Samantha Jane Geimer is now 45 years of age. She is a mother of three who lives in Hawaii and works as a bookkeeper. When she was growing up and working as an aspiring model, she attended a photo shoot in Los Angeles, California. In 1977, Roman Polanski allegedly drugged and raped Geimer at the house of Jack Nicholson. Polanski was taken into custody and the filmmaker plead guilty to charges of statutory rape. The filmmaker left the country before the court could properly sentence him. Years later, in September of 2009, Polanski was arrested in Switzerland on a California arrest warrant. Geimer’s attorney has asked a California appeals court to drop the case.
It is said that Roman Polanski plead guilty as part of an agreement with prosecutors to the unlawful sex of a 13-year old to abstain from the charges of rape and sodomy. The filmmaker than fled the country in 1978 prior to his official sentencing. Ever since, he has been wanted by the United States authorities.
It has been reported that Roman Polanski’s victim forgave the filmmaker publicly in 1997 and also arranged an orderly request for Los Angeles prosecutors to drop charges against him. She issued a statement saying, “I have survived, indeed prevailed, against whatever harm Mr. Polanski may have caused me as a child,” adding that she has put the situation behind her.
Geimer filed a claim for damages against Polanski and he settled to pay $500,000. It is not said whether he has paid in full. His victim said that she would rather have the case dismissed since it did happen so long ago. She claims that it is disturbing how this case is being managed.
His arrest has caused much heated debate. Some filmmakers are in support of the Polanski while other despise his actions.
