Gabourey Sidibeâs Precious performance is being highly lauded by critics after the film swept the Sundance Awards. Read her biography here, and see photos and video below.
Sidibe portrays an inner-city teenager who endured poverty and abuse at the hands of her father. She stars in the film alongside Mariah Carey, who plays a social worker who helps Sidibeâs character work her way through tough times, and the plight of teenage motherhood.
The two reportedly grew close on set and began to refer to each other as âbesties.â She said: âMariah and I would sit and talk about fashion and perfume and jewelry.â Both were apparently uncomfortable in the modest wardrobe they were given for their parts in the movie.
As a first time actress, she had to learn how to differentiate between her real self and her character. Experienced actors tend to channel their character and sometimes embody them entirely. But Sidibe says she could just switch it on and off. She told MTV News:
“We would do really, really intense scenes where I’d be crying or saying, ‘My dad raped me,’ and then when the director would say, ‘Cut,’ I’d be gigglingâŚI don’t have any formal training how to be an actress. I don’t know any better than to stop being the character once the scene is over.”
Being suddenly thrust into the spotlight hasnât bothered her so far, but she did find it interesting that people associate the real her with her character, even on the street:
âThey’ll start to talk to me in a more careful tone or be really wary of meâŚThey’ll want to coddle me or they see me in the street and they’ll want to hug me and rub my back and tell me everything will be OK. But it’s cool, I like hugging.”
Gabourey Sidibe was born in Bedford-Stuyvesant, New York Cityâthe same area that rappers Jay-Z and Biggie grew up in. Her experiences in the urban setting of Brooklyn no doubt helped her get into character as Precious. At just 26 years old, she is already slated to appear in another film next year called Yelling To The Sky.
