Andre Agassi’s meth use is detailed in his new autobiography Open, along with some other shocking revelations. Read more about Andre Agassi’s tell-all here.
The book is set to hit the shelves soon, but People got a hold of a preview copy, and so far it sounds juicy. A tennis star doesn’t quite fit the bill of a typical meth user. I mean, how are you supposed to stay fit and agile while living that lifestyle? Was he staying up for days, creeping around construction sites stealing copper pipes? Not quite.
His use wasn’t that extreme. In fact he stops short of calling his former self an “addict.” According to his book, Agassi began to regularly use the drug for about a year—right in the middle of his hey-day in the mid-90s. He claims he was introduced to meth by his assistant Slim, but it eventually caught up to him. After using on and off for a while he ended up failing a drug test.
Rather than take the wrap, he just blamed his assistant. Agassi wrote:
“I say Slim, whom I’ve since fired, often spikes his sodas with meth—which is true. I say that I drank accidentally from one of Slim’s spiked sodas.”
But why even mess with the stuff when you’ve got a wildly successful career, and multiple endorsements? Well, part of the book apparently delves into the pressure to perform that seemed to weigh heavily on him, which all started when he felt that he was forced to play tennis by his father, even though he “hated” it.
I suppose that resentment ran deep, because he describes the “undeniable satisfaction” he got from “harming myself and shortening my career.”
I’m just glad that he pulled himself out of that situation and was able to remain successful. Are you surprised to hear about his drug use?
