My phone started ringing off the hook this morning with friends and family telling me to turn the TV on . I watched in horror as I read the ticker of ‘Boy in Balloon’ trapped inside. The contraption, which looked like a Jiffy Pop Popcorn container, could be seen flying at a clip of around 25 miles per hour and reportedly could have gone as high as 10,000 feet.

The boy was soon identified as 6-year-old Falcon Heene, and according to the family, he somehow got into the contraption, where it got tethered loose and it started to take off. Get more details of the story here and here. Photos can be seen here. Television crews via helicopter were tracking the balloon, which had been airborne for two hours. It has been reported that it got as high as 2,500 feet. Officials were baffled on how to get the aircraft down, since it was believed that Heene was trapped. The balloon has since landed, and Falcon was not inside.

Falcon and his family were featured in the ABC show, Wife Swap earlier this year. You can see a picture of Falcon here.

The Heene family have been described as “storm-chasing and science-obsessed”. No word yet on the boy’s whereabouts. Speculation of the boy even being on the balloon are now surfacing, and some are wondering if this was just a hoax to turn attention to the family. What are your thoughts? What do you think of 6-year-old Falcon Heene - boy in balloon or not?
