Fox NFL’s Jessica Simpson weight jokes went a little too far in an animated cartoon that was run this weekend. Read about the ad, and see the video here.
Some say Fox went a little too far with a cartoon that shows Dallas Cowboys players sitting in the locker room talking and cracking jokes about the singer. Simpson used to date quarterback Tony Romo, and made many high profile appearances at his games.
The bit starts with a goofy cartoon version of Marion Barber comparing her to another Cowboys player, saying “Man I still can’t believe Tony dated Jessica Simpson, even AFTER she blew up bigger than Flozell Adams!”
It then cuts to the locker room where the animated Jason Witten says, “Unlike Tony, at least Jessica comes up big when it counts!”
Then, the cartoon Tony Romo appears and says, “Hey, guys, I’m standing right here.”
Coach Wade Phillips replies “Sorry, Tony. Say Tony, Is Jessica around? We could use a defensive tackle.”
The short clip was presented as part of a Burger King ad, but it turns out Burger King had little to do with the content of the bit. Fox was quick to issue a statement distancing their major sponsor from it. Here’s what they had to say:
“Burger King Corp. did not have any editorial input in the creation of the animation that ran last Sunday, and no one from Burger King Corp. approved it before it aired. Upon reflection, our poor attempt at humor was insensitive and we deeply apologize to anyone who might have been offended.”
At least they owned up to it and apologized! I guess it was weak attempted at making fun what some people say was a fluctuation in her waistline a while back. I personally thought it was ridiculous—she’s a normal healthy looking girl, and has never been anything close to resembling “fat.”
Does anyone else see the irony in Fox airing a cartoon about weight that is associated with a fast food restaurant?
