Although Angelo Cammarata is in the news today, it is not the first time. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, it was ten years ago, in 1999, that the Guinness Book of World Records recognized as the world’s longest serving bartender, receiving local and international notoriety and media attention, including an appearance on Comedy Central The Daily Show, and induction into the Bartender Hall of Fame by Jim Beam and recognition from the governor and the town council. Thus, the bartender to retire at 95, had already made it into the record book at a mere 85 years of age.

As a biography, Angelo Cammarata is 95 years old. Known to family, friends and patrons as Camm, he is the son of an Italian immigrants who owned a grocery store in on the North Side of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. With Prohibition about to end, his father seized upon the idea of serving liquor and began selling beer at the grocery store at midnight the day Prohibition ended on April 7, 1933. That is when Angelo Cammarata began as a bartender at age 19. In 1935, his father closed the grocery and built a bar on the site, Cammarata’s Cafe where Angelo Cammarata continued to work continuously, with the exception of his service in the Navy in World War II.

In 1954 the bar Cammarata’s Cafe relocated it to West View, Pennsylvania and Angelo Cammarata ran it with his two sons, John, 60 and Frank, 59. His wife, Marietta, is 92. In total, the couple has four children, fourteen grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.

Now 77 years after he began, Angelo Cammarata will retire as he has sold the bar to new owners and he will be leaving as soon as the new owners are approved by the state.
