John Mayer Mug-Shot Fight: Who Had It First? (Photos)

August 27, 2009

A John Mayer mug-shot has turned up! After being challenged to dig it up, one outlet posted the John Mayer mug-shot online. But why was he arrested? Find out here, and see photos and video below.

The guitar-whiz posted a message via twitter that if TMZ was able to find his old mug-shot from 2001, he would then donate $25K to the charity of their choice. Here’s the original tweet:

“if Harvey Levin at TMZ can produce my mug shot, I will donate 25k to the charity of his choice.”

It didn’t take the outlet long—not surprising considering they’ve boasted about just how “wired” they really are (a fact they proved before and after the story broke of Michael Jackson’s death).

TMZ admits that The Smoking Gun posted the mug-shot roughly five minutes before they did. TSG has the proof that they beat TMZ to the punch because of a tweet sent out at 3:03PM. Regardless, it looks like Mayer will have to pay up because the challenge was apparently directed at them, and not TSG.

MTV reports that the challenge came about after Fall Out Boy’s lead singer Patrick Stump was arrested for a similar charge. Following that news, John Mayer tweeted that he’d had a similar experience, and joked that “It’s the lamest answer to the question ‘why you in here?”

The mug-shot was taken after John Mayer was arrested in Atlanta eight years ago for driving on a suspended license. Not long after, the case was dismissed, and he was let off the hook.

It’s refreshing to see a celeb so laid back about their mug-shot swirling around online. Maybe this can start a new trend—any celeb who is arrested should have to agree to make a charitable donation (I’m sure that’ll catch on like lightning).
