Megan Slankard: Singer-Songwriter, Guitarist and Rising Music Star

The pop-folk singer-songwriter is in the news today as she has taken part in “Aaron Trotter & the Incident at Bikini Beach,” which is a theatrical production — a spoof which involves a mashup of the 1950s-1960s Annette Funicello-Frankie Avalon beach-party movies and the Harry Potter series of books and movies. It is being staged at the EXIT Theatre in San Francisco. Wearing a bathing suit, Megan Slankard portrays Candy a Marilyn Monroe-like character whom she characterizes as “a very dumb bleached blonde.”

“I love the ‘Harry Potter’ books,” Slankard said. “It’s a tribute in more of a poking way. Very, very silly. It’s a little bawdy in places. We say it’s PG-13.”

As a biography, Megan Slankard was born in June 1983 so her age is 26. She was born in San Jose, California and grew up in Tracy, California and was home schooled by her mother.

She got her start as a singer and songwriter at age 10. At age 17, she released her debut album Lady Is A Pirate in 2001, which she recorded at home and released on her own record label, Megan Slankard Music. The album features additional production from Rich Talley (who also plays bass and guitar on some of the tracks) and from her brother, Tom W. Slankard.

Her second album Freaky Little Story was released in 2004, co-produced by Chris Holmes and released on her independent label. She drew nationwide notoriety in late 2004 due to her appearance on TLC network’s show, making Megan Slankard What Not to Wear an inextricable link to this day. Two of her songs were featured on the episode: “Too Bad You” and “Mockingbird.” Her music continues to draw notice and favorable reviews, and she was nominated for a 2009 Independent Music Award.
