The two-hour season finale, full of excitement, suspense and the fanfare of live performances, saw, in the end the chicken catcher and country singer Kevin Skinner, 35 years old and from Mayfield, Kentucky, become the 2009 winner.

The program’s judges throughout the season were Piers Morgan, David Hasselhoff, and Sharon Osbourne with host Nick Cannon. With a field of strong contenders, including the trio of singing children known as Voices of Glory, with a heartrending backstory of helping their mother by singing to her as she was comatose in the hospital after an accident as well as the second place finisher, Barbara Padilla who triumphed over cancer.

After the long season, The America’s Got Talent 2009 Top 10 finalists were:

Kevin Skinner
Grandma Lee
Texas Tenors
Recycled Percussion
Barbara Padilla
Fab Five
Voices of Glory
Drew Stevyns
Hairo Torres
Lawrence Beaman

Final performances took place on Monday, September 14, (a detailed recap is here) with the audience then given the opportunity to vote for the winner.

From the Top 10, the Top 5 America’s Got Talent 2009 finalists were:

Kevin Skinner – Winner
Barbara Padilla – Second
Recycled Percussion – Third
Texas Tenors – Fourth
Voices of Glory – Fifth

It was a close race once the top two finalists were announced. Kevin Skinner had immediately won over audiences with his humble presence, and self-professed profession as chicken catcher. Who would have imagined the emotionally stirring and musically accomplished performance of the Garth Brooks classic, If Tomorrow Never Comes.

Similarly Barbara Padilla had won over America as well. Facing a cancer diagnosis, undergoing chemotherapy and radiation and ultimately prevailing with her health and her voice intact, she has been more than a sentimental favorite; she has had the vocal prowess proving her worthy of winning.

And as always, with two strong contenders there could be only one winner of the Las Vegas headliner show and the million dollar prize.

That is the latest word on the America’s Got Talent 2009 winner, Kevin Skinner. Readers, share your thoughts. Did America make the right choice?

Sooooooo happpy Kevin won! He touched my heart for some reason.. I most definitely didn’t think he would’ make it. It’s obvious that Barbara was better in so many ways but you know what? She’s alive and I’m sure she’s thankful for that much. Everyone needs a break in life. Even if Kevin doesn’t succeed in Vegas who cares? He’s one million dollars richer. THis oppertunity will probably never come again for him but Barbara still has a long way to go.

Shocked, stunned, sad, furious. First no Clay Aiken, no Susan Boyle, no Adam Lambert and now no Barbara Pidalla ? America is so mistaken in their voting. My first choices were the two most polished & likeable: Texas Tenors and Barabra, and even would have settled for Recycled Percussion but not Kevin even tho I liked him a lot but could’nt see him in the top 5. Drew Steven would have been a better dark horse. At least they didnt vote for Grndma who would never have had enuff material for a real act. Barbara was robbed and will have a much better career. Why cant reality shows vote for talent and not backstory ? Shine on Tenors, barbara and drew…your day will come.

I’m a country music fan, but I also know the difference between true talent and mediocrity. I was surprised when Voices of Glory beat Lawrence Beaman, then downright shocked when Kevin Skinner beat Drew Stevyns. Skinner didn’t belong in the top 10 let alone the top five. Barbara Padilla left everyone else in the dust when it came to pure talent.

    Barb Says:

Why all the negativity? America VOTED KEVIN to win, and that’s what this game is all about, the most votes, personally, I wanted to see Rickie and Eric win, and I’m sure we all have our favorites this season! BE NICE! Nice Is Good! KEVIN, YOU ROCK ON!

Barbara should have won! That chicken catcher needs the funds and God smiled on him tonight. His life changed… instantly! Barbara will go far, don’t think this chap will. For this NO talent man… it was as if he had won the lottery; that’s it for him. He is a no-talented, white trash. Those girls in clogs were better than him. He was NOT good at all. Kevin Skinners win is another indicator that America is filled with white-trailer park people, unfortunately, in the majority. DISGUSTING!

Kevin, if you just wrote that you’re an imposter.
