The two-hour season finale, full of excitement, suspense and the fanfare of live performances, saw, in the end the chicken catcher and country singer Kevin Skinner, 35 years old and from Mayfield, Kentucky, become the 2009 winner.

The program’s judges throughout the season were Piers Morgan, David Hasselhoff, and Sharon Osbourne with host Nick Cannon. With a field of strong contenders, including the trio of singing children known as Voices of Glory, with a heartrending backstory of helping their mother by singing to her as she was comatose in the hospital after an accident as well as the second place finisher, Barbara Padilla who triumphed over cancer.

After the long season, The America’s Got Talent 2009 Top 10 finalists were:

Kevin Skinner
Grandma Lee
Texas Tenors
Recycled Percussion
Barbara Padilla
Fab Five
Voices of Glory
Drew Stevyns
Hairo Torres
Lawrence Beaman

Final performances took place on Monday, September 14, (a detailed recap is here) with the audience then given the opportunity to vote for the winner.

From the Top 10, the Top 5 America’s Got Talent 2009 finalists were:

Kevin Skinner – Winner
Barbara Padilla – Second
Recycled Percussion – Third
Texas Tenors – Fourth
Voices of Glory – Fifth

It was a close race once the top two finalists were announced. Kevin Skinner had immediately won over audiences with his humble presence, and self-professed profession as chicken catcher. Who would have imagined the emotionally stirring and musically accomplished performance of the Garth Brooks classic, If Tomorrow Never Comes.

Similarly Barbara Padilla had won over America as well. Facing a cancer diagnosis, undergoing chemotherapy and radiation and ultimately prevailing with her health and her voice intact, she has been more than a sentimental favorite; she has had the vocal prowess proving her worthy of winning.

And as always, with two strong contenders there could be only one winner of the Las Vegas headliner show and the million dollar prize.

That is the latest word on the America’s Got Talent 2009 winner, Kevin Skinner. Readers, share your thoughts. Did America make the right choice?

Hell no. Flat singing, moderately talented Garth Brooks impersonator over the gloriously voiced Barbara… no that was not the correct choice in my opinion.

Yes so happy for Kevin! I wanted him to win. No he did not have the best voice but he had the best heart! He will grow and learn…he was the one who would never have been given a chance without the win..others will. He needed the win……Yes you go Kevin!

    Cinema Says:

ugh, he was bad. I wanted Grandma Lee to win, but I would have been happy is Barbara Padilla or Hairo won.

    Carla Says:

I can not believe this. So many with TRUE talent. Did America really pick this? I do not know how he even got in the finals. I really liked this show, but I could not watch the end. All the talented ones picked off and the “joke” chosen as the winner. I hope the others somehow know we all liked them better.

    Annoyed Says:

I quit watching when Grandma Lee was eliminated! Kevin can’t sing to save his life and America made a horrible choice. Now I know why we have stars like Kanye. There were many singers eliminated that had a much better voice than Kevin. He has no stage presence and has no idea how to handle himself on stage. I can see his Vegas contract being cut short so that they can get someone in there that will actually make them money.

    tracy Says:

Not good! He can’t sing at all! There was so much better talent.

  7. 7
    LAP Says:

Barbara is waay to good for a mediocre Las Vegas contract. Kevin is a nice guy, good hearth, but his talent is not worth the first place (not even 5th place). His original audition was his best, and from that magical moment it was not good anymore. As a matter of fact, he was mediocre at best at the finals. If he is the best talent that America can chose, God help us…

    RSS Says:

Are you kidding me?????? How stupid is America! Flat country singing with a twang…..give me a break. I would rather listen to frogs chirping. How can you miss the beauty of Barbara Padilla. Even the excitement of Recycle Percussion was better than this yokel. For a million dollars, Kevin isn’t even close! I feel cheated. What a horrible show. Done

    James Says:

The reason Barbara did not win is that Kevin is the BEST. Opera is not very popular in America but country is. Hang in there Kevin. You did us proud.

    Kate Says:

Barbara doesn’t need this – she will go on to sing with the Met or something worthy of her.
She doesn’t need Las Vegas ! (altho the million dollars would be nice-lol)
