America’s Got Talent is hosted by Nick Cannon (picture above) with judges Piers Morgan, David Hasselhoff, and Sharon Osbourne (photos below).
This year, producers held auditions in in several cities: Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Boston, Miami, Houston, and Seattle. Additionally they held an open call on the Today show in search of a “wild-card” contestant. Submissions were also accepted via the Internet.
Of course this year the big question is this: Will America’s Got Talent give us a major surprise and international star like Britain’s Got Talent Susan Boyle, arguably now one of the most famous women in the planet who just months ago was an unknown singer in Blackburn, West Lothian Scotland?
Paul Telegdy, the new reality programming chief at NBC offers this assessment.
“I think a lot of viewers would turn up for ‘America’s Got Talent’ with or without the Susan Boyle phenomenon…We have had our own phenomenon come out of the show. I remind people that Terry Fater is the most-paid reality show contestant of all time.”
Fater is the AGT 2007 winner, a ventriloquist, comedian and impersonator who now has a multimillion-dollar deal performing at the Mirage on the Las Vegas Strip.
Telegdy went on to point out the opportunity the program offers to everyone. There are no age restrictions; competition is open to everyone. The America’s Got Talent 2008 winner was the insurance salesman and opera singer Neal Boyd.
“I hope there’s a heightened interest in the fact that the real reason for the success of ‘America’s Got Talent’ and ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ is this democracy of access,” he said. “There are people who wouldn’t even get in line at ‘American Idol’ who appear on ‘America’s Got Talent.’ It’s come one, come all.”

A correction. The auditions were not in Seattle, they were in Tacoma.
