21 year old up and coming rapper Dolla was shot and killed at an upscale mall Monday afternoon. Dolla, whose birth name is Roderick Anthony Burton, was shot several times in the parking lot of the Beverly Center. Dolla was shot in the head, as he and another rapper, D.J. Shabbazz, waited in the valet parking area. Authorities said two suspects were seen fleeing in a silver Mercedes-Benz SUV after the 3 p.m. shooting. Dolla was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and was declared dead at a hospital.
23-year-old Aubrey Louis Berry of Georgia was arrested for suspicion of murder at Los Angeles International Airport with a gun Monday night. His bail was set at $1 million.
“As the officers approached the suspect, they asked him ‘Do you know why we’re here?’” Holcomb told The Associated Press. “He put his (hands) up in the air and said ‘Yes, I’ve got a gun in my waistband. Don’t shoot me.’”
Roderick Anthony Burton II was born on November 25, 1987, making his age 21. His mother is of Puerto Rican decent, and his father of African-American origin. Roderick was better known as Dolla, and was a member of Da Razkalz Cru, who signed to Elektra Records in 2003 and released the single “So Fly.” However, the single was not a hit and he was dropped from the label. Later that year he met Diddy and Akon. Diddy hired Dolla as a model for his Sean John clothing line, and Dolla appeared on billboards across the United States.
In May 0f 2007 Dolla signed to Akon’s Konvict Muzik label. He made his debut with the single “Who the F#ck Is That?”, which reached #82 on the Billboard Hot 100. His song, “Feelin’ Myself”, is featured on the Step Up soundtrack. He followed his debut single up with a second single “I’m F#cked Up” and a third single, entitled “Make a Toast,” was released on November 4, 2008. He also appeared in the music video for Ciara’s video for Never Ever.
His album titled “So you wanna be a Gangsta?” will still be released despite his tragic death.
