Susan Boyle has attained international stardom in a matter of days. The previously unknown 47-year-old singer from Blackburn, West Lothian, Scotland has won millions of worldwide fans with her astonishingly brilliant and touching rendition of ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ from Les Miserables on Britain’s Got Talent, winning over cynical and disbelieving judges Simon Cowell, Piers Morgan and Amanda Holden and a jeering audience who could not have fathomed what was in store from the singer who declared she wanted to emulate the successful career of West End legend Elaine Paige.

Days later, the standing ovation and cheering goes on, as Susan Boyle has become a worldwide YouTube viral video sensation, a media star, and an inspirational story around the world. You can see the video that launched her international recognition on YouTube here.

Susan Boyle has appeared on numerous television programs in the UK as well as the U.S. where she has appeared on the television morning shows, Good Morning America and CBS Early Show, as well as on cable networks Fox and CNN. During that interview she told viewers she is, ‘absolutely gobsmacked’ by the worldwide response she has received.

Susan Boyle has been singing since age 12, starting in school plays. She has studied singing privately and had success in local talent competitions, but as she had told the audience at Britain’s Got Talent, she had never had the opportunity to pursue a professional career. She shared what it was like to sing before such a skeptical audience and judges.

“I just thought mentally, I’ll show them, so I did,” she said. “If people are cynical, you try and win them ’round and it worked. It must have been a miracle, but it worked.”

In a recent interview, two of the Britain’s Got Talent Judges, Amanda Holden and Piers Morgan, admitted they had prejudged the singer. Morgan went on to apologize to the singer.

“I would just like to apologize to Susan Boyle, because I think it’s long overdue, because, from the clip, you know, (millions of) people could see that Simon Cowell (the third judge that night — he of “American Idol” fame) and I — we don’t have the best reputations, I think, for courtesy in America. I think we owe her on apology because it was an amazing performance. As I said, we were all laughing at her when she started, and by the end, the last laugh was on her.”

The competition is not over, as the international star follows up her ‘I dreamed a Dream’ performance with the Susan Boyle ‘Whistle Down the Wind’ performance on Britain’s Got Talent. Aside from the likely musical success that awaits her has also expressed in interviews her desire to sing for the Queen. As a winner of Britain’s Got Talent, she would have that opportunity as she would be taking part in the Royal Variety Performance. In an interview, Simon Cowell has said that winning is not a given for the now international star, and that the competition is not ‘quite the one horse race you are going to think this is.’ He also did not confirm if he would represent the singer.

“It’s difficult to say at this stage because I think we’ve got to treat it as it is, which is a competition.”

Susan Boyle Whistle Down the Wind is set for her next appearance on Britain’s Got Talent. The song is from the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical of the same title which is, in turn, based on the 1961 movie (which starred Haley Mills) of the same title which itself was based on the Mary Hayley Bell. It is the story of three Lancashire farm children who find a bearded fugitive hiding in their barn whom they mistake for Jesus.

The Whistle Down the River lyrics from the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical were written by Jim Steinman. British stage and screen actress Lottie Mayor was the first to sing the song.

It would not be surprising at all if the Susan Boyle Whistle Down the Wind version becomes the definitive version.
