In the highly anticipated comedy-drama, producer-director-writer Tyler Perry reprises the Madea character from his debut movie and subsequent movies. Wearing full drag, including a long silver wig, Perry plays the signature role of Madea as a grandmotherly woman who is as outspoken and opinionated as she is outlandish.

As the title suggests, Madea winds up in jail after she has been involved in a high-speed chase on the freeway. While in jail she encounters numerous characters, notably the prostitute and former drug addict Candace Washington, portrayed by Keisha Knight Pulliam. The former child actor, Pulliam, became well known for portraying the youngest daughter, Rudy Huxtable, on The Cosby Show. Now 29, she is in a breakthrough role as the troubled woman whom Madea helps while in jail.

Rounding out the cast of ‘Madea Goes to Jail’ are Derek Luke, Viola Davis, Keke Palmer, Drew Sidora, Sofia Vergara, Vanessa Ferlito, David Mann, Tamela J. Mann, RonReaco Lee, Kordai Harris, Jackson Walker. Also featured in the movie, portraying themselves are Al Sharpton, Mablean Ephriam, Greg Mathis, and Phil McGraw.

Tyler Perry is only 39 years old and has established a remarkable career as a Hollywood mogul with a string of hit movies, two TV sitcoms on TBS, ‘House of Payne’ and ‘Meet the Browns’ and his own motion picture and TV production studio, Tyler Perry Studio. He is the first African-American to own a movie studio; it had its grand opening in October 2008 with an A-List gala with Oprah Winfrey, Will Smith alongside trailblazing legends of African-American film; Sidney Poitier, Cicely Tyson, Ruby Dee, and Lou Gossett, Jr. The studio is set on 30 acres outside of Atlanta, Georgia.

Additionally, Tyler Perry has also created a new company, 34th Street Films, which is based in L.A. and Atlanta and develops projects written and directed by others. The company has just partnered with Lionsgate and Oprah Winfrey to “present” the independent movie “Push: Based on the Novel By Sapphire” which won three awards at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.

His 2005 debut movie “Diary of a Mad Black Woman,” was made for only $6 million (which he co-fianced with Lionsgate) and grossed more than $50 million. His subsequent five movies with the same co-financing deal with Lionsgate on limited budgets by Hollywood standards, have all been box office hits: “Madea’s Family Reunion” ($63 million); “Daddy’s Little Girls” ($31 million); “Why Did I Get Married?” ($55 million); “Meet the Browns” ($42 million); and “The Family That Preys” ($37 million).

In an interview he talked about the audience for his movies.

“It’s about 50% Christian churchgoing. It depends on what part of the country I’m in…If I’m in the Bible Belt it’s 90% churchgoing. If I’m up north in Newark it may be 30%, so it depends on where you are.? He fine-tuned his characters doing live stage shows around the country. “I used to adjust the shows to where I am. If I was in the Bible Belt I made it more Christian, God-themed. If I was up north I could get away with saying ‘ass’ a little more. I would say 75%-80% women, 10%-20% men and about 5% children. What I’ve learned is you treat the women right and they bring everybody else.?

After tremendous success in the U.S. market Tyler Perry is planning for global distribution of his movies and working on his eighth movie.

Here are several photos and posters from the movie. Photos of the movie cast, a video interview with Tyler Perry and the Madea Goes to Jail movie trailer video are below.
