In the movie, Sweet Bird of Youth, a young dishy Paul Newman stars as a young ‘gigolo‘ who returns to his southern hometown in search of the lost love, played by Geraldine Page, of his youth.

This is classic steamy Tennessee Williams stuff! A perfect weekend movie.




Geraldine Page Biography

Geraldine Sue Page was born on November 22, 1924 in Kirksville, Missouri. She died in New York City on June 13, 1987 at the age of 62.

She attended the Goodman Theatre Dramatic School in Chicago and studied acting with Uta Hagen in New York. She began appearing in stock at the age of seventeen. Geraldine was a trained method actor and worked closely with the famous Lee Strasberg.

Her Broadway career was extensive, starring in roles in such plays as: Summer and Smoke, The Rainmaker, Sweet Bird of Youth (she would later star in the movie version of this with Paul Newman and receive an Oscar nomination for Best Actress), and Agnes of God.

She was an Academy Award-winning actress having been nominated for an Oscar eight times! And although she starred in at least two dozen feature films including Hondo and Interiors, she is primarily known for her work in the 1986 movie ‘A Trip To Bountiful’ in which she won a Oscar.

Geraldine did various television shows in the 1950’s – 1980’s, including movies and series, such as Hawaii Five-0, Kojak, and several episodes of Rod Serling’s Night Gallery.

She also was a voice actress and voiced the villainous Madame Medusa in the Disney animated film The Rescuers.

Geraldine Page has also appeared in television productions and won two Emmy Awards as Outstanding Single Performance By an Actress in a Leading Role in a Drama for her roles in the classic Truman Capote stories, A Christmas Memory from 1967, and The Thanksgiving Visitor from 1969.

Her final film was the 1987 Mary Stuart Masterson film My Little Girl, which was the film debut of Jennifer Lopez, yes, that Jennifer Lopez.

Geraldine Page was married to actor Rip Torn at the time of her death. They had three children. Rip Torn dearly loved Geraldine and at her memorial – which was widely attended by many from the Hollywood community – he said this of his wife:

“Mi corazon, mi alma, mi esposa (My heart, my soul, my wife). We never stopped being lovers and never will.”
