Playboy Mexico apologizes for a cover that features a nude Maria Florencia Onori draped in a cloth and made to resemble the Virgin Mary. Maria is standing in front of a stained glass window, and there is a headline that reads “We Love You, Maria.”
I couldn’t find much in terms of a biography on Maria Florencia Onori (at least not anything that was in English), except that she’s a hot sexy international bunny caught up in this Playboy Mexico controversy. Drawing more attention to the issue was the magazine’s release date, which coincided with a Mexican holiday that honors the Virgin Mary. In response to the outrage many Catholics are feeling, Chicago-based Playboy Enterprises said the magazine is published by a licensee, and they did not approve or endorse the cover. They also said:
“While Playboy Mexico never meant for the cover or images to offend anyone, we recognize that it has created offense, and we as well as Playboy Mexico offer our sincerest apologies.”
The publisher of Playboy Mexico said:
“The image is not and never was intended to portray the Virgin of Guadalupe or any other religious figure. The intent was to reflect a Renaissance-like mood on the cover.”
