Brianna Broitzman, Ashton Larson: Nursing Home Shocker

December 2, 2008

Six teenagers, including Brianna Broitzman and Ashton Larson, were charged with abusing and sexually humiliating residents of the nursing home they worked for. Read the rest of the story below.

Brianna Broitzman and Ashton Larson, along with four other teen girls, were charged with elder abuse for physical harming and sexually humiliating seven seniors that lived in the nursing home the six girls worked for. All six teens were officially charged in court on December 2, although four of the girls were only identified by initials and birthdays because they were minors at the time the crimes were committed. According to the complaints filed with the court in Albert Lea, a small city in southern Minnesota, the girls spat on, spanked, improperly touched, and tormented the residents of the Good Samaritan Society nursing home. Some of the girls charged only witnessed the events, but apparently they all laughed together about them during school.

Brianna Broitzman, charged with 11 criminal counts, allegedly poked one resident’s breasts, spit into the mouth of another, and “put her bare butt” in the face of a third resident. Ashton Larson, charged with 10 criminal counts, once “inserted her finger into a resident’s rectum,” spit water on another “vulnerable adult,” and would deliberately bathe a resident in a rough manner so the elderly man would get an erection. Both girls were charged with fifth-degree assault, abuse of a vulnerable adult by a caregiver, abuse of a vulnerable adult with sexual contact, disorderly conduct and failing to report suspected maltreatment, all of which are gross misdemeanors and carry a maximum penalty of a year in jail and a $3,000 fine for each count.

Freeborn County Attorney, Craig Nelson, said that if found guilty:

“they most likely will face suspended jail sentences and probation, so they’d have the threat of jail hanging over them if they get in more trouble.”

The incidents came to light partially after a state Health Department report found that four aides were abusing 15 residents in order to make “work fun.” Those aides were fired by the nursing home after the report was filed. The current allegations were brought to the home’s attention by an aide that was getting fired for swearing in front of a resident. She blew the whistle on what everyone else was allegedly doing. She was among the four juveniles charged on December 2. Attorney Nelson states prosecuting the case may be difficult due to most of the testimony coming from the aides themselves.

The abused residents all suffered from Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, which the aides believed would allow them to get away with their behavior. It was reported that they felt they would not get caught because “residents did not have their minds.”

    michigan Says:

everyone of those girls should get punished and that ones that are old enough to go to jail they need to get some time to teach them a lesson, put those girls into a jail population and see if they can stand up for themselves. The ones that are suposely too young need to go to a center for teenagers so they also can see how it is to be not in control. I have my mother in a nursing home and I would probably go to jail if someone mistreated my mother because my mom cannot defend herself and is such a sweet person luckly Dec.18,2008 my mom will be home with us because of this kind of evil people.

    Nina Says:

“get in trouble”…? So…completely dehumanizing the weak and vulnerable, sexually assaulting them, abusing them and continuing to do so for months is merely a little teen “trouble”? Spirited hijinks? Oopsies, we were just having a little fun and it got out of hand?

If these two monsters don’t do hard time, then the state of Minnesota will have clearly stated they are of the opinion that the lives of the elderly are worthless.

Any prosecutor who doesn’t ask for hard jail time and any jurist who doesn’t push for jail time during sentencing deserves to be treated exactly as the elderly victims in this case were.

The only way to stop this revolting disregard for human life is to come down hard and fast on those guilty of perpetrating these kinds of crimes.

    Susan Lange Says:

A suspended sentence? What a joke! These are the most defenseless members of society and that’s the best we can do to protect them? THIS is PUNISHMENT?!

Nina’s comment couldn’t say it better, Minnesota must see to it that these kids are punished harshly. If not, it does send a message out that they find their elderly without value.

    God help society.

    lived near there Says:

The sad thing is, the county attorney will be limited by the law in what he can and cannot do. The state can’t make a new law for this case and punish them according to it. But, it just might spur the legislature into action. Maybe they’ll make appropriate punishments for this kind of wicked behavior. If the punishment is harsh others will think twice about mistreating people’s loved ones.
One thing does have to be taken into consideration with this case, the testimony is coming from people who are in trouble and probably trying to make themselves look less evil. Who knows what, if anything, has been exaggerated or made up.

these girls deserve to be send to a big state prison where they will be subject to the abuse they inflicted on some of the most defenseless members of our society.

If I am a juror – I let them off – sophmoric at best

everyone should put thier vindictive desires towards real sex offenders

The sentence seems so light – and the girls are obviously so slutty – that I have to wonder who at the courthouse they’re F**K**G. If they don’t end up going to jail, I think that needs to be the next investigation.

    Outraged Says:

The families of the victims need to file a
class action against Brianna Broitzman and
Ashton Larson for serious physical and emotional damages. It appears that Albert Lea
is too corrupt to be willing to prosecute the
women. The families of all of the perpetrators need mandatory parenting classes.
    Something clearly went wrong somewhere.
