Aside from hosting and winning during this week’s CMAs, American Idol winner Carrie Underwood also performed her new hit song Just a Dream. As a tribute to fallen soldiers, the song was dedicated to Master Sergeant James “Tre” Ponder, who died June 28, 2005 during a rescue mission when the MH-47 helicopter he was aboard crashed in the vicinity of Asadabad. His wife, Leslie Ponder, introduced Carrie Underwood’s performance. Of the experience, she said:

“It was not about Tre. I was just a voice for all families who have lost a loved one. The media plays out our fallen as just a number, but behind that is a real person. Every single one of them has a family who loves them and misses them. I was just a face for those people.”

Leslie and Tre’s daughters, Samantha (11) and Elizabeth (9), attended the show’s rehearsals and were able to meet several of country music’s biggest stars. Leslie works with the Snowball Express organization, which serves to honor and pay tribute to the children of fallen military heroes who have given their lives while serving since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
