Deborah Norville Biography

As a biography, Deborah Norville was born on August 8, 1958 in Dalton, Georgia. She is a former beauty queen, having won the title of Georgia’s Junior Miss in 1976. She attended the University of Georgia, where she graduated summa cum laude and received her degree in journalism.

She worked for the local TV stations in Atlanta and Chicago, and got her big break when she became anchor of NBC News at Sunrise, the morning show before the Today show airs. You would see Norville regularly as a fill in for then hosts Bryant Gumbel, Jane Pauley and John Palmer.

In September 1989, she assumed Palmer’s role at the newsdesk and he moved to her role at Sunrise. After Jane Pauley left Today, Norville was named as Today’s co-ost. The pairing between Norville and Bryant Gumbel was met with dismal ratings and it was evident that they lacked chemistry. She was known as the “icy newswoman”.

Norville went on maternity leave in February 1991 and Katie Couric filled in while Norville was away. People Magazine interviewed Norville and she was photographed breastfeeding her newborn son. NBC was said to have been unhappy about the photo, that it was in poor taste. In April 1991, it was announced that Norville would not be returning to the Today show and Couric was officially named co-host.

Norville went on to host a radio show, “Deborah Norville – From Her Home To Yours”, which debuted in September 1992. Unfortunately, it only lasted a year. She made her return to TV in 1993, where she was a correspondent for the CBS News show Street Stories. The show was canceled in 1994.

She replaced Bill O’Reilly as the host of Inside Edition in 1995, and remains the host today.

Deborah is married to Karl Wellner and together they have three children.
