“True Grit”, starring John Wayne and Kim Darby airs tonight on Turner Classic Movies. The film earned Wayne and Oscar and launched Darby’s acting career.
As a biography, Kim Darby was born Deborah Zerby on July 8, 1947 in Los Angeles, California, so her age is 61. Her parents were both professional dancers who performed as The Dancing Zerbys, and she too studied dance growing up. But she had acting aspirations as well, and at age 14 she was granted special permission to attend acting class on the lot of the Paramount Pictures studio.
Kim landed her first acting role in the film “Bye, Bye Birdie”. It was a very small role, and in fact was uncredited. From there she landed several television roles, still only a teenager. Her career has spanned four decades, and has included the films “True Grit” and “Better Off Dead”. She continues acting today, her latest movie being 2007’s “Cold Ones”. Kim also teaches an acting workshop. At UCLA for 17 years, Kim now travels to various universities and film schools giving her class.
Her most famous role to date is that of Mattie Ross in “True Grit” opposite John Wayne. Of the role, she says she turned it down about 10 times before finally caving in. She had just had a baby and didn’t think she was ready. But it’s a good thing she changed her mind. Fellow actress Mia Farrow turned down the part originally, and has said it was the biggest mistake of her career. Of her co-star, she says,
“John Wayne was fascinating. He traveled with his stock broker and his masseuse. He liked to cook, and he used to come over to see me and my nanny so that we could taste whatever he was cooking that day. He was such a nice man, and I wish I had gotten to know him better than I did.”
Kim has been married five times and has two children.
