Kate Garraway, GMTV presenter and former “Strictly Come Dancing” star, has raised eyebrows after posing for photos in which it looks as if she’s breastfeeding a calf. Read the story and see photos and video here.
Yes, you read that right. In the photo it looks like Kate Garraway is breastfeeding a calf. Kate did the photo shoot in order to promote a documentary about women who breastfeed other women’s babies. Kate, who has a two-year-old daughter, met mothers in the United States who breastfeed other women’s babies. She also met with a career woman who pays another women to feed her baby while she’s at work. She says she posed for the pictures because she wants people to stop and think about whether it’s crazy to feed milk from another species.
Kate Garraway said that she came away from the documentary feeling wonderment about the female body:
“Because of the sexualisation of breasts, we don’t see them as the clever, brilliant things they are. . . . I want to go as far as possible to be provocative and shake people up, without actually being so offensive that I upset GMTV viewers.”
Her life hasn’t been all cushy. At one time, prior to attending college at Bath University, Kate Garraway worked in a toilet-roll factory operating the shrink-wrapping machine.
Immediately after receiving her university degree, Kate Garraway started her career in media, moving from radio at BBC Radio Oxford to regional TV jobs that included presenting “Meridian Tonight” from 1995 to 1997. She then went to BBC News 24 and later to Sky News where she was anchor of the breakfast show, “Sunrise.” In 2000, Kate Garraway joined GMTV where she hosted both The News Hour and GMTV Today. Other gigs included presenting ITV’s “Too Many Cooks” and the BBC National Lottery show “The People’s Quiz.”
Her first marriage – to Ian Rumsey – ended in divorce. On September 10, 2005, she married Derek Draper. They have one daughter, Darcey, who was born on March 10, 2006. Darcy weighed in at 8 lbs. 3oz.
Kate Garraway gained a lot of popular recognition when she appeared in “Strictly Come Dancing,” the British version of “Dancing With The Stars.” She partnered with Anton Du Beke for the show. The couple consistently received low scores, but the public kept them in the show for several weeks before they were eliminated in November 2007.
2008 has been an action-packed year for Kate Garraway. ITV announced that she would present its diet and fitness series, “Inch-Loss Island” on GMTV. The show would also feature her “Strictly Come Dancing” partner Anton Du Beke. 2008 was also the year that the “Daily Mirror” and “Sunday Mirror” claimed she committed adultery with Anton Du Beke. Kate Garraway accepted substantial libel damages from the rags as a result.
