Estelle Getty, most well known for her role as Sophia on the hit comic classic “The Golden Girls”, died this morning at approximately 5:30 a.m. She passed away at her home on Hollywood Boulevard after suffering from Alzheimer’s for some time.

Estelle was born on July 25, 1923 in New York City. She acted from an early age, doing small stage productions while working in a law office as a secretary and raising two kids. Her big break came when she landed a role on “The Golden Girls”, which ran from 1985 until 1992 with 173 episodes in all. She won two Emmys for her portrayal of Sophia over the life of the show.
Estelle was very active in AIDS fundraising and a big supporter of gay rights. She will be remembered for the love and laughter that she spread to many with her comedic talents.
