Charlton Heston died Saturday, April 5, 2008 at his home in Beverly Hills. A cause of death has not been released, but he was diagnosed with symptoms similar to Alzheimer’s in 2002. His wife Lydia was at his side at the time of his death. He was 83 years old.

Charlton Heston Biography

Charlton Heston was born John Charles Carter in Evanston, Illinois on October 4, 1924. His parents were Lilla Charlton and Russell Carter, and at the age of 10, his parents divorced. Lilla would later marry Chester Heston. Charlton took the Heston surname. He attended New Trier High School and was part of the drama program there. He received a drama scholarship to Northwestern University.

He left the university in 1944 to enlist in the Air Force and served two years. He rose through the ranks and became a Staff Sergeant. While serving, he married Lydia Marie Clarke in 1944. After the war, they lived in Hell’s Kitchen, New York City and worked as models. They have a son, Fraser Clarke Heston and an adopted daughter, Holly Ann Heston.

His filmography is too numerous to mention, but he had many leading roles in epic films such as Ben-Hur (for which he won an Academy Award for Best Actor), The Ten Commandments and El Cid, just to name a few.

He is also widely known for his roles in Planet of the Apes and Earthquake. His last known work was in Shrek 2, where he was the voice of a nobleman. You can read more about the many films he starred in here.

In addition to acting, Heston was known for his political work as well as being President of the National Rifle Association from 1998 to 2003.
