Queen Rania Biography

As a biography, Queen Rania Al-Yassin was born August 31, 1970, in Kuwait, so her age is 37. Her Palestinian parents fled to Jordan from Kuwait in 1990 after Saddam Hussein invaded. She attended American University in Chicago where she earned a degree in Business Administration in 1991. She later attended the HEC University of Paris for a degree in Management, but first she worked for Citibank and Apple Computer for a few years.

In January 1993, Queen Rania met Prince Abdullah bin al-Hussein (now King) at a dinner party. They quickly announced their engagement and married on June 10, 1993. They have four children: Prince Hussein, Princess Iman, Princess Salma, and Prince Hashem. When King Abdullah was named King, Rania became the youngest Queen in the world. Of becoming royalty, Queen Rania says,

“I am not at all conscious of it. I make a conscious effort not to be conscious of it. Because I’m Rania, you know? People call me ‘Queen,’ but, you know, that’s not me…I’m Rania. … One of the major misconceptions about this position is that people think that I might be far removed, that I might not be in touch with reality. The honest truth is that my life is very much about dealing with issues on the ground, dealing with … the problems that our country faces. That’s something I do on a daily basis.”

Queen Rania is mostly known for outspoken support for women’s rights, especially when it comes to educational opportunities for girls. In 2005, she was named number 80 on Forbes’ list of its 100 Power Women.
