Marketa Irglova and her boyfriend, Glen Hansard, won an Oscar last night in the Best Original Song category with their song ‘Falling Slowly’ from the film ‘Once.’ Hansard stepped up to the mic and gave his speech, but Marketa was cut off by the music before she could say a word. See the video below.
After she was cut off, Glen walked Marketa off the stage and I felt sorry for her not being able to enjoy that moment. Host Jon Stewart must have felt the same because after the commercial break, he brought her back on stage and she gave the best speech of the night. Not only was the speech heart-felt and geniune, it was the best moment of an otherwise lackluster Academy Awards.
Irglova and Hansard also performed their award-winning song earlier in the ceremony. The song was nearly exluded because of eligibility concerns, but luckily for Hansard and Irglova it was eventually approved. You can see Marketa Irglova’s Oscar speech below.
