American Idol Top 12 Boys

Okay, so without further adieu, here are the recaps of the boys in the order that they sang:

David Hernandez - Gah, to be the first one up, that’s gotta be some pressure! He had a strong performance though and I thought it was a great way to start the show off. Paula told him that she knows that it is unnerving to be the first one out of the blocks but she loves his brilliant vocals and his perfect vibrato. She thought he did a good job. Simon was pleasantly surprised that it was actually better than he thought it was going to be. He thought that the first part of the song was terrific, but in the middle he kind of fell apart. He told David to loosen up a bit.

Chikezie Ezie - Oy, it was B-O-R-I-N-G. Randy told him that he’s an old fashioned singer and he needs to make sure that he makes the songs new and fresh, but he could definitely sing and it was all right. Paula told Chikezie that he’s an R & B throwback and that he did a very nice job. Simon, on the other hand, hated the entire thing, right from his orange suit to the hideous wink. He thought it was old fashioned, cheesy, and corny. He likened it to something that was filmed 40 years ago. Sorry Chikezie, but I think you’re going buh-bye on Thursday.

David Cook - I liked that David did his own thing with the song, and sounded pretty good. Randy thought that it started out a little rough and weird, but in the end he rocked it out. Paula said that he rocked it and made it something original. Simon said that it was good, but he felt that he shouted a bit in the middle of the song. He thought it to be a weird song choice and never heard it sung that way before, but he almost made it believable.

Jason Yeager - Moon River. If you’re familiar with the song, then you know that it’s so boring and blah. Well, that’s pretty much how he sounded tonight as well. I will give him credit though, the guy can sing. Randy told him that he did a pretty good job, had some pitch problems in there, and thought that during the middle of the song he lost focus or wasn’t concentrating. Paula was quite sentimental over this song, as she told him that she had her first ballet recital to this song. Oh brother. It’s all about you, Paula, isn’t it? Sheesh. Simon said that the performance had a cruise ship vibe going on…heh heh…and that it was just middle of the road. “You’re a dependable old dog, we can rely on you, but you’re not going to be very exciting.” Looks like this is another one whose ship will be sailing…heh.

Robbie Carrico - Can you believe this guy once dated Britney Spears? I like this rocker dude, and he reminds me of how Chris Daughtry performed throughout the whole American Idol competition, he was solid throughout. I think Robbie will be the same way. Randy said that he did a very nice job and liked his version of the song. Paula told him that it was a perfect song choice, he looked fantastic, and his vocals were right in the pocket. Simon thought that his performance was one with any semblance tonight but he also questioned Robbie’s “authenticity” as a rocker or a pop singer. Um, a pop singer Simon? Puhleaze.

David Archuleta - Okay, we’ve already told you about David before…David has one of those old souls to him and it really comes through when he sings. It’s hard to believe that he’s just 17. He’s got the good looks that the girls go crazy for, and I predict that he will go far in the competition…Top 3 is my guess. Randy said that he has always been a big fan of David, he’s brilliant, and sang with so much maturity for only being 17. Paula said that it was a brave and bold choice of a song to sing and loves that he knows what’s best for him. He really did a great job. Simon said, “when you got it you got it. by a comfortable mile, best performance of the night.”

Danny Noriega - He sang Jailhouse Rock. Danny did the Elvis thing tonight and I thought it was okay. Randy said that he knows how to have a good time and thought it was pretty good, loved the performance - just kinda hot. Paula said that Danny has the most amazing vocals but he chose a safe song to sing. Simon felt that the whole performance was grotesque. “If you’re going to take on Elvis, at least do it well.”

See the rest of the Top 12 boys American Idol recaps below.

Luke Menard - The Matthew Fox lookalike chose a boring song and I just knew that the judges weren’t going to be very kind…Randy said that throughout the whole song he was pitchy, that he sang almost consistently sharp and it wasn’t great. Paula said that it wasn’t the best song choice for him. Simon told him that it was forgettable and no one would remember him. I think he runs the risk of being let go as well.

Colton Berry - He sang Suspicious Minds, which is one of my all time faves. Randy thought he did a pretty good job, Paula said it was nice to see a different side to him, but felt like it wasn’t one of his best performances. Simon thought it was okay and felt like Colton didn’t “represent himself” tonight. It just sounded like a kid who might have a career in musical theater and it was “very karaoke”.

Garrett Haley - First of all, he had the unbearable task of singing Breaking Up is Hard to Do. I think that’s all you need to know. Egads. Boring rendition, but the girls will vote him through because of his long locks…picture Leif Garrett. Randy told Garrett that he just didn’t do anything with the song. Again, I know they’re performing songs from the 60’s, but this kid had to have known that this was a bland song to begin with and it just wasn’t going to have any up tempo with it. Paula pretty much told him to not be afraid to change it up - a slow tempo brings the song down. Simon basically blasted the poor kid, telling him that it was boring, that he looked terrified on stage, sounded whiny, and he looked as if he had been in his room for a month.

Jason Castro - Okay, another one of my favorites this season. He has these gorgeous gorgeous eyes…He was the first one of the evening to play guitar while singing and man he totally caught my attention. Great job with the whole performance. Randy thought that he had some pitch problems, his performance didn’t blow him away but it was all right. Paula said that she was blown away by him and the song choice was perfect. Simon told Jason that his performance this evening is in the Top 2 of the night. “You’ve got it. You’re great with the camera, very good choice of song, and made it sound current. Effortless. Terrific.”

Michael Johns - Um, yeaahhh. Loved him, loved his voice. I dunno, guys in accents just…well, you know. Randy thought that watching him perform was like watching a true legend rock performer and he was the bomb baby! Paula said that it was an excellent way to end the evening. Simon said that he has by far been the most consistent out of all of the performers. He has that natural charisma of a lead singer and he’s just got it vocally.
