What is up with actors saying that their movie sex scenes are terrifying, or frightening, or scary? You get to hang out with a gorgeous, naked star, probably for hours as you do multiple takes. I don’t get it. And yet, actor after actor says they were fearful of the love scenes they had to perform with their co-star.
Hayden Christensen and Jessica Alba in “Awake”
Hayden Christensen stars with Jessica Alba in “Awake”, the thriller in which Christensen undergoes heart surgery but suffers from anesthetic awareness so that he is aware during surgery but can’t move. He recently said that filming sex scenes with Jessica Alba, his on-screen wife, was scarier than filming “Star Wars”:
“I was just so nervous. Really nervous! Running around with a lightsaber is really pretend, but when you are put in a situation where the scene you are doing becomes so real, it is terrifying!”
Show of hands – who thinks filming a love scene with Alba would be terrifying?

Rachel Bilson and Zach Braff in “The Last Kiss”
Zach Braff and Rachel Bilson got it on in “The Last Kiss”, but Braff struggled a bit making the intimate stuff comfortable.
“Filming that scene was awkward. But that’s one of the things I like about the way the sex scene is done- the honesty of it. It’s not one of those sex scenes where he lays down on the bed and everything’s beautiful, shot through filters. It’s a fumbling, awkward, elbows everywhere kind of scene.”
Justin Timberlake and Christina Ricci in “Black Snake Moan”
Even Justin Timberlake, the man who brought sexy back, hates filming sex scenes. In “Black Snake Moan” Justin filmed a love scene with Christina Ricci, and he recalls it being uncomfortable:
“When you’re doing them you’re constantly thinking it isn’t going to look hot at all. I’ll crack a joke or something so it is not as uncomfortable. The sex scene was pretty hot. I’m not going to say it doesn’t feel weird pretending to f**k someone in front of a man with a sound boom, though.”
How have I not seen this movie yet?
Angelina Jolie and Matt Damon in “The Good Shepherd”
In “The Good Shepherd”, Matt Damon had to get hot and heavy with one of his good friend’s girlfriend’s, Angelina Jolie. Angelina didn’t seem to mind, but Matt thought it a bit awkward.
“Doing a love scene with the girlfriend of a good friend is weird. We all know each other.”
James McAvoy and Keira Knightley in “Atonement”
James McAvoy, who shot one of the steamiest love scenes this year, doesn’t like it either, even when it looks hot on the film. Of making out with Keira Knightley in “Atonement”, he says,
“It’s never easy and it’s always a little bit sweaty and uncomfortable. When they call action, if you feel the lady’s breast, it’s your decision to feel the lady’s breast. It’s like, this is wrong. You have no parameters. We carried on and about 10 seconds later we just said very sheepishly, ‘Sorry about that.’
“What was great about Atonement was Joe Wright, the director, was very, very, very on the ball with what he wanted, so when you were doing something it was at his behest.”
Sharon Stone in “Basic Instinct 2″
Now, there might be one of these “sex is scary” lines that I’ll believe – pretending to make love to Sharon Stone might in fact be frightening. Her “Basic Instinct 2: Risk Addiction” co-star certainly felt that way, saying he liked filming “Blood and Chocolate” more:
“In one scene I had to lie on the floor with pieces of red meat about my person. Then they set a wolf pack on me. It wasn’t as scary as a love scene with Sharon.”
Wow, now that’s bad.
