Women Love ‘The Girls Next Door’

The reality show, ‘The Girls Next Door,’ on E! that follows the antics of Hugh Hefner’s three girlfriends, Holly, Kendra, and Bridget has a large viewing audience. What’s surprising, 70% of that audience is female. 28 million women watch the adventures of three Playmates, all the while, sharing the affections of a 81-year-old man. Bridget thinks they are so popular with women because they fantasize about living their life in the mansion.

“I think they live vicariously through us. I’m sure the hardcore feminist will say we’re trapped, but I think viewers see how empowered we are. We’re very independent women with our own ideas and our own career expectations. It’s very liberating.”

I’m not sure what the reason is, but I find myself watching the show sometimes. I don’t know why. I have no desire to be Hugh Hefner’s girlfriend or hang out in the grotto. I mostly like laughing at the dumb things they say. So I hope ‘The Girls Next Door’ is what women flock to when they want entertainment, and not when they want to feel empowerment.
