Two days after Pimp C, aka Chad Butler, was found dead in a Los Angeles hotel room his name was among those nominated for a Grammy on Thursday.

Pimp C was one half of the duo UGK (Underground Kingz) with Bernard “Bun B” Freeman. They were nominated in the category of rap performance by a duo or group for the song “Int’l Players Anthem (I Choose You).” This was a collaborative effort done with another popular hip-hop duo, OutKast. Other artists in this category include Common featuring Kanye West, Fat Joe featuring Lil Wayne, Shop Boyz, and a partnership among West, Nas and KRS-One.

“While this nomination is bittersweet to say the least, I am thankful for the acknowledgment,” Freeman said in a statement. “And as this was a lifelong dream for Chad, it warms my heart to know that he has finally gotten the recognition from the powers that be that his talent, passion and relentless drive for music so rightfully deserved.”

An official cause of death for the rapper has not been released. An autopsy was performed but further tests are pending. See Pimp C’s full biography here.

Pimp C was not the only Grammy nominee who had passed this year. Gerald Levert, who died of an accidental overdose of prescription medications last year, was cited for best traditional R&B vocal performance and guitarist Robert Lockwood, who died last year at 91, was nominated for best traditional blues album.
