Pimp C is a rapper from the duo UGK. He was found dead in a hotel room at the Mondrian this morning, December 4, 2007. See his biography and photos below.

Pimp C was found dead in this sixth floor room at the Mondrian Hotel after a call was made to 911. Homicide detectives are investigating.

Pimp C Biography

As a biography, Pimp C was born Chad Butler on December 29, 1973 in Port Arthur, Texas, so his age would have been 33. Other aliases include Sweet James Jones, Sweet Jones, Tony Snow, Mick Jagga, and C Tha Pimp Free.

Pimp C and Bun B formed the rap duo UGK in the 1980’s and appeared on such hits as Jay-Z’s “Big Pimpin'” and Three 6 Mafia’s “Sippin’ On Some Sizzurp”. The pair helped put Houston on the rap map. However, their success was interrupted when Pimp C was sentenced to 8 years in prison on January 28, 2002 after he violated his probation; Pimp C had failed to perform the community service received after an aggravated gun assault charge. Bun B began the “Free Pimp C” campaign, and t-shirts with the slogan were everywhere. Pimp C was released December 30, 2005, but not before he released his first solo album, “Sweet James Jones Stories”.

Pimp C was outspoken, calling out such hip hop giants as Russell Simmons, Ne-Yo, and Lil Troy. Even Oprah didn’t escape the rapper’s words.

Sadly, Pimp C was killed on December 4, 2007. He had recently performed with Too Short at L.A.’s House of Blues the previous Saturday. The L.A.’s coroner’s office said it does not suspect foul play, but they cannot reveal a cause of death until after an autopsy and toxicology has been completed.

Although UGK was rumored to have issues with record labels throughout their career, Jive Records released a statement today saying,

“We mourn the unexpected loss of Chad. He was truly a thoughtful and kind-hearted person. He will be remembered for his talent and profound influence as a pioneer in bringing southern rap to the forefront. He will be missed and our prayers remain with his family and Bun B. I’ve known Chad since he was 18, and we loved him dearly and he was a cherished member of the Jive family.”

Rest in peace.
