Zayda Pena is Los Culpables

December 3, 2007

Meet Zayda Pena (aka Zaida Pena) of Zayda Y Los Culpables, a Mexican singer who was gunned down by drug lords. Her photos and music videos are here.

Not much is known about the biography of Zayda in English so please add to it. She was 28 years old. Her picture shows a beautiful face which to me hides some pain. Her music depicted the despicable drug culture and accompanying violence that haunts her home turf in northern Mexico. That is what got her into trouble.

They tried to kill her on Friday but she survived the first attack and successful surgery that followed. As she lay recovering in a Mexican hospital, she was shot once again through the heart.

She wrote her own epithet in the song “Amore Ilegal” (Illegal Love): “How it hurts to silence this great love that you and I have. I will be with you, although the world says our love is illegal.”

Zayda Pena had a successful career and following in the U.S. and Mexico, not breaking into the big time but still recording four albums either on her own or with her group. A complete discography is below, all produced under the Balboa music label except for the last one under the Musart studio label.

Zayda started singing at a very young age. She was part of a church choir, and later on she joined a group of female teenagers who formed an accousting guitar group called: “La Rondalla Femenil (de Matamoros)”. She had a unique voice and that’s what made her go her own route where she joined a band called: “Los Culpables”. Then, her band was named: “Zayda y los Culpables” (which, thanks to her became famous). She was a songwriter and a singer, and her personal life was no secret. Unfortunately, there are people who think they can kill someone just because they can do it, and this poor chick had the bad luck of dying in a violent and unfortunate manner. I hope she gets to rest in peace, a star was killed and a lot of fans (along with her family) will definitely miss her. ZAYDA, WE LOVE YOU!!

So who is going to play her in a made-for-tv movie?

J Lo hit it big after the movie Selena and Zaida’s life seems to have more drama so whoever plays her in the movie could very well hit it big too!
