Kiefer Sutherland pleaded no contest Tuesday in his DUI case and will have to start serving a 48 day jail sentence when “24″ goes on a production break in December. Sutherland agreed to serve 30 days for DUI, in which he had a blood alcohol level above the legal limit of .08 percent, and 18 days for violating his probation for a 2004 DUI case as well.
Sutherland was not in the courtroom, but his attorney, Blair Berk, entered the plea. In addition to his jail time, Sutherland will also have to enroll in an 18 month alcohol education class and attend alcohol therapy sessions on a weekly basis.
Sutherland released the following statement:
“I’m very disappointed in myself for the poor judgment I exhibited recently, and I’m deeply sorry for the disappointment and distress this has caused my family, friends and co-workers on `24′ and at 20th Century Fox.”
One thing you can count on, he will not be released early, like other celebrities have in the past. According to the plea agreement, he has to serve all of his jail time, and the sheriff was also ordered to not release him to electronic monitoring. He will officially be sentenced on December 21st, when he will start his 18 days in the county jail. It’s the same day that “24″ goes on their winter production break. After that, he has until July 1, 2008 to complete the 30 days left of his sentence. He will also be on probation for five years.
