‘These Systems Are Failing’ is the debut album of Moby’s project with the Void Pacific Choir, which takes its name from a DH Lawrence quote (“California is a queer place — in a way, it has turned its back on the world, and looks into the void Pacific….”).

It’s the second major release from Moby this year whose memoir, ‘Porcelain,’ was published earlier this year along with a soundtrack album, ‘Music From Porcelain,’ featuring music from the years leading up to his landmark multi-platinum-selling 1999 album, ‘Play.’ He also released a free download album, ‘Long Ambients 1: Calm. Sleep,’ this year. Prior to that, his most recent studio album was 2013’s ‘Innocents’ which was released to critical acclaim.

In a recent interview, Moby said of the new project, “For me, the reason to a make an album is, one, just the simple joy of being in my studio and working on music.” Continuing, he added, “Also, I love the dialect that arises when you release music or anything out into the world; you get to do interviews and help people learn how to respond to it.”

Now as the album arrives in full the critics are weighing in. Here’s a roundup of reviews.

“….Taken individually, the tracks from These Systems Are Failing are refreshingly vibrant for the 51-year-old Moby, who, even after 12 studio albums and countless other releases under his belt, continues to reinvent himself. …..” –Consequence of Sound

“….The album’s 12 furiously paced tracks recall Moby’s 1996 album Animal Rights, which was deeply rooted in the hardcore punk influences of the musician’s youth. This newest project takes the frantic urgency of the artist’s early work and polishes the edges, adding an electronic sheen to what are otherwise guitar songs, all in the name of pointing to the modern world’s most destructive flaws…..” –Slant Magazine

“….Instead of going back to Seventies/Eighties’ punk’s lo-fi amphetamine rhythm’n’blues punch, however, Moby rebuilds it, presumably using the Void Pacific Choir, whatever that is. Over the course of nine tracks, manic, relentlessly pounding drums martial the action swathed in fat layers of synthesized buzz’n’hum distortion….” –The Arts Desk
