Lin-Manuel Miranda SNL Host: Review Roundup, Video Highlights

October 9, 2016

Lin-Manuel Miranda was host of Saturday Night Live. The creator and star of the hit Broadway musical ‘Hamilton’ made his much anticipated debut. Did he live up to hopes and expectations? The TV critics are weighing in and you can see a roundup of reviews and video highlights right here!

Lin-Manuel Miranda

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical ‘Hamilton won 11 Tony Awards including ‘Best Musical’ and ‘Best Score, and if that weren’t enough, he also won the Pulitzer Prize. Not to mention that the show has become a cultural phenomenon and perhaps educated the public a bit about the nation’s first Secretary of the Treasury. And with two Grammys and an Emmy to boot, he’s well on his way to EGOT status.

So what’s next? Not Disney World, but instead the famed stage of Studio 8H! And not surprisingly, sang his way through the monologue, doing a parody of ‘My Way’ from the show, updated to our contentious Presidential election.

In the least surprising move of all time, Alec Baldwin’s “Donald Trump” mocked the leaked lewd video from 11 years ago that’s had the major media in a frenzy for the past couple of days. And of course, that wasn’t the last of the Trump bashing, as SNL went into overdrive, even bringing on two surprise cameos — Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon as undecided — to contribute to the pile-on.

And through it all, there was Lin-Manuel Miranda bringing some Broadway gravitas here and there in a politically peppered night. Quite literally so in the re-envisioning of ‘The Music Man’ as a send-up of the Wells Fargo scandal saw him doling out bank accounts left and right.

Here’s what the critics are saying of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s debut as host of the show.

“….That Miranda was so clearly excited to be hosting a show he says he’s watched since he was a kid (even dropping a Laraine Newman reference as proof during his “My Shot”-inspired monologue musical number) was endearing as hell, and, as host, he threw himself into every sketch with similar enthusiasm. When the absurdly accomplished Miranda exclaimed, “This has been the best week of my life!” during the goodnights, it’s clear he means it. …..” — A.V. Club

“….As a whole, “SNL” was probably a little too bipolar this week given that it had super-biting political humor mixed with Broadway spoofs. We’re not a huge purveyor in the Great White Way and don’t know Lin-Manuel’s work as much as the next guy, so there were times we felt like the episode went over our head. Yet, despite a few clear misses, there was enough to laugh about this week that it made for worthwhile viewing. Grade: B-…….” — CarterMatt

“….Hamilton star Lin-Manuel Miranda hosted SNL this weekend, and things went a little less spectrally than we hoped. The highlights once again had more to do with Alec Baldwin as Donald Trump than it had to do with the host. That’s not to say that Miranda wasn’t a good host, but he didn’t take things to the next level like others have. ….” — FanSided
