Bon Iver ’22, A Million’ Album Review Roundup

September 27, 2016

Bon Iver’s new album is ’22, A Million. It’s the indie folk band’s first new album in five years and the music critics are weighing in. You can see a roundup of reviews here.

Bon Iver

Singer-songwriter and musician Justin Vernon is the founder of Bon Iver. His debut under that name, ‘For Emma, Forever Ago’ won nearly universal critical acclaim in 2007. It landed on the top albums of the year lists of numerous publications including NME, SPIN, Pitchfork. Paste and others. It’s ranked at No. 92 on Rolling Stone’s 100 Best Albums of the 2000s.

It’s been an upward trajectory ever since. He and the band went on to win the Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 2012. Now nearly a decade later, with a growing and loyal fan base — and some notable collaborations with the likes of Kanye West and others — the band returns with their first release since 2011’s ‘Bon Iver, Bon Iver.’

In fact, it’s an album that almost didn’t’ come about, as a few years ago, Justin Vernon had said he might not record another Bon Iver album. In a recent interview, he opened up about why he needed this hiatus and how he made the decision to return. He said, ““I had mental stuff, stuff I felt needed healing.” Elaborating, he added, “And as morose or self-involved as it is, I felt that the only thing I could do was to go into myself a little bit.”

The new album arrives after much anticipation — five years is a long time, after all, in the fast-moving world of pop music. It’s being greeted with quite a few rave reviews.. Here’s what the critics are saying.

“….This is a febrile folktronica album which confounds and astounds in equal measure, melting your heart one minute and agitating your eardrums the next, but always baffling and beautiful.

“…. Not since Kid A has an album so superb pushed away and pulled closer its audience, simultaneously and with such aplomb……” –Pretty Much Amazing

“….It’s a record that feels challenging only on the surface: hidden behind its cryptic exterior is a generous and rewarding collection of songs that represent one of the most cohesive and affecting musical undertakings produced in recent years. It’s both selfish and generous: an entirely personal undertaking that only completes itself with the listener’s complicity and comprehension…..” –The Line of Best Fit

“….The cracks, breaks, and flaws in Vernon’s voice allow his humanity to shine through a little more. By saying less and embracing fragility, He sounds more vulnerable than ever…..” –Slant Magazine

“….Yes, ‘22, A Million’ is painfully, painfully sincere. Yes, it’s also hopelessly oblique, grandiose, and pretentious. Yet it’s also an absolute diamond of a record, at once fragrantly beautifully and also hopelessly complex, easy to disregard and yet thoroughly hypnotic…..” –Clash Magazine
