Twin Shadow performed Prince’s ‘Purple Rain’ album in its entirety at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. You can watch video highlights and get the details on this epic tribute to the late legendary artist.
There have been countless tributes to Prince in the months since his shocking and untimely death on April 21 at age 57. We’ve seen and heard many artists perform covers of ‘Purple Rain’ from Bruce Springsteen to Dwight Yoakam. The major awards shows have all delivered tribute performances with varying degrees of success from Madonna’s controversial performance at the Billboard Awards to BET Awards’ multi-artist, multi-song tribute that included the likes of Sheila E. and other Prince proteges.
This time around, it’s Twin Shadow — stage name of synth-rock music artist George Lewis, Jr. — who performed the entire ‘Purple Rain’ album at the Masonic Lodge at the iconic Hollywood Forever Cemetery, final resting place of such yesteryear Hollywood stars as Rudolph Valentino, Douglas Fairbanks and Jayne Mansfield. And, as the L.A. Times reports, Twin Shadow is no stranger to Hollywood Forever cemetery as he recorded his most recent album,’Eclipse,’ at the chapel on the cemetery grounds.
The Oscar-winning soundtrack of the movie of the same title. That landmark movie and soundtrack launched Prince to stardom and went on to sell more than 22 million copies to date. In the months since his death the album has been selling briskly.
According to Yahoo! Music, Twin Shadow told the audience gathered at the Masonic Lodge, “On the day that Prince died, I rushed to my studio — to write a song, or to cover one of his songs. I felt obligated as an artist to dedicate something to him.”
Continuing, he went on to say, “And as I was doing it, I realized that the magic inside of his recordings cannot be replicated, and it certainly just has to stand on it own. And I thought, why not do something that is momentary — like life — and just perform a few shows?”
Here’s the ‘Purple Rain’ tracklisting:
“Let’s Go Crazy”
“Take Me with U”
“The Beautiful Ones”
“When Doves Cry”
“I Would Die 4 U”
“Baby I’m a Star”
Fortunately, for those who didn’t land a ticket in the tiny 150-seat venue, photos and video have gone viral on social media, Instagram in particular.
