Lupita Nyong'o

Yes, the 34-year-old Oscar winner was stunning once again. As a fashion icon she continues to soar even as her acting career is on a zenith. No “Oscar curse” in sight! Her Oscar-winning role in ’12 Years a Slave’ launched her from the obscurity of being yet another Yale Drama alum to Hollywood A list star.

She dazzled on the red carpet two years ago when she swept up one award after another, and it’s hard to find a fashion fail among her many edgy and daring outfits ever since. This time around, according to People, the beautiful, flowing gown is from the Elie Saab Resort 2017 collection. It’s a winner. She tops it off with a beautiful African-inspired headdress.

As for the movie, it’s a standout as well, she’s portraying Harriet Mutesi, the mother of Phiona Mutesi, a Ugandan chess prodigy from Katwe — hence the title. It’s based on the bestselling book by Tim Crothers’ ‘The Queen of Katwe: A Story of Life, Chess, and One Extraordinary Girl’s Dream of Becoming a Grandmaster.

In a cover story interview with Vogue, Lupita Nyong’o said of the movie and the opportunity to bring the character to the big screen, “”There are certain cards that have been dealt me that I take on. I want to create opportunities for other people of color because I’m fortunate enough to have a platform to do that. That is why Eclipsed and even Queen of Katwe are so important, to change the narrative, offer a new lens on African identity.”

Echoing those comments, she told EW how she felt upon reading the opening pages of the script: “It was the first time I felt really awakened by a script and super challenged.”

Oscar buzz, yes, of course. Most especially as there’s been the continuing hashtag controversy #OscarsSoWhite that’s been predominating conversation in Hollywood for months. If the industry is looking to redeem itself, so to speak, in the midst of this firestorm that has no end, this would be a sure bet.
