Kirstie Alley on How She Gained Weight and Her Diet and Fitness Secrets

Kirstie Alley opened up about how and why she gained the 50 pounds that she has famously lost and kept off for the past couple of years. As a Jennie Craig celebrity spokesperson she’s been candid about what she did to lose the weight, but now she’s revealing the habits that lead to weight gain and how she reversed them.

Kirstie Alley’s public struggle with weight gain and loss had gone on for years and she had done the gamut from yo-yo dieting to starring in the bluntly titled reality TV series ‘Fat Actress.’ Now, more than two years into continued weight loss success, she opens up in an interview with People magazine about what led her to put on so many pounds in the first place.

She said, “It’s not in my nature to plan…I’m a very spontaneous person, and that’s how I got fat.” Elaborating she went on to acknowledge that gaining weight was inevitable “if you travel a lot and you’re wined and dined and you love holidays.”

Continuing she added, “I always joked that my holidays lasted from Halloween to New Year’s Eve, and maybe even into Valentines Day…I would think it was okay for me to eat whatever I wanted during those months.”

And obviously that had consequences. She went on to speak about how she continued to rationalize even as the pounds were piling up. She said of her excessive holiday-style indulging, “It was very social and joyous, like, ‘I’m going to have a big Halloween party and have caramel apples,’ but then I realized, ‘Wow, that’s your real trap zone.

Now she has a different approach. She said of it, “So I still do the holiday thing, but I’ve learned something that wasn’t in my vocabulary before, and that’s a little bit of ‘discipline.’ ”

Yes, it is a bit unusual, as celebrities may tell us how they lost weight, but to admit publicly what kinds of behaviors brought about weight gain isn’t quite as hot a topic. Sure we see social media uproar and screaming headlines that try to shame celebrities for weight gain and these days, that’s just as likely to provoke the backlash over how “fat shaming” is a no-no.

She went on to speak about how life changing her association with the iconic weight loss brand has been. She said, “I love doing Jenny Craig and being their spokesperson…I’m not exaggerating when I say my consultant is my lifesaver! She has taught me how to maintain my weight fairly effortlessly.”

As for her workout routine, Kirstie Alley told the magazine, “I do stay active, but I hate the gym…It bores the bejeezus out of me. I’m not a lunging, squatting human.”

She takes a different approach that’s in alignment with her interests: “I’ll do things that sound fun like a dance class or yoga, or I’ll walk or run…Sometimes it’s just whatever my friends are doing.”
