Barbra Streisand opened up about her thoughts on fame, her legacy and new album, ‘Encore: Movie Partners Sing Broadway.’ In the rare TV interview, the legendary entertainer, who’s wrapping up her first tour in several years, also opened up about whether or not she will ever give any more live performances.
The 74-year-old Barbra Streisand has garnered numerous awards and accolades in her more than half a century career. She’s a Kennedy Center Honoree, she is an EGOT with numerous Oscars, Grammys, Emmys and Tonys. She’s also the only music artist in history with at least one No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 in the past six decades.
Her new album ‘Encore: Movie Partners Sing Broadway’ features her performances of classic songs from musicals with a surprising range of Hollywood stars as duet partners, from Hugh Jackman, Jamie Foxx and Anne Hathaway to the more unlikely Daisy Ridley, Melissa McCarthy and Alec Baldwin among many others. The album is receiving nearly universal critical acclaim. It’s her first since ‘Partners’ of 2014 which went platinum.
She spoke on a range of topics in a rare television interview on CBS News Sunday Morning. In speaking with Anthony Mason of her early beginnings as an artist, she said, “It’s a funny thing to say, but I knew what I wanted to do since I was very young, like seven.”
She went on to reveal the impetus for becoming a performing artist. She said, “I was not seen as a child.” Elaborating, she added, “I had to be seen.”
Asked if her rise to stardom enabled her to feel seen, she said, “I did feel seen but what I discovered is I don’t like stardom. I don’t like what goes along with it. I don’t like to perform,. I don’t like to be photographed. I don’t like publicity.”
She went on to reveal, “This is hard for me now. I realize I will never do this again. Perform live.”
When pressed, she went on to insist that she won’t tour or give concerts again. She said, “This is done. This is it. I want to go sit by my pool and look at the ocean and read a book.”
