Ariel Winter is defending her racy Instagram photos and sharing an inspiring body positivity message. The ‘Modern Family’ star opens up about being a target of social media “bullying” and “body shaming.”
Yes, the 18-year-old TV star is just the latest actress to jump into this body shaming versus body positivity dialogue, or perhaps shouting match is a better term. Either way, it’s become a perennial topic. Free speech? Bullying? Harmful to society? These are all the questions that are bantied about. Yes, social media has become the deafening echo chamber as celebrities respond to trolls which, truthfully, is likely encouraging more trolling.
And to think that all it takes is a bunch of images of a woman who’s curvy who doesn’t mind revealing a bit of her derriere — her choice, mind you, not paparazzi shots — and the world is in uproar. Yes, Ariel Winter’s pics — some of which you can see below — are racy. But after all she chose to post them!
Now Ariel Winter defends herself without complaining and, instead, throws in a dash of comedy. She told Entertainment Tonight, “I don’t really think I’m telling myself, ‘You should post this, you shouldn’t post that,’ I feel like I’m just having fun.” She went on to say, “I like my fans to see what I’m doing.”
As for those revealing shots, she says, “”Everybody is so hyped up on the fact that I post photos where my butt’s out. It’s a butt. Everyone has a butt.I don’t think it’s crazy.”
She has a message for the body “shamers,” too. She says, “It’s like, ‘Let me live! I’m enjoying my life, you’re enjoying your life, you should be posting your butt if you like it, too!'”
Continuing, she said, “I’m not going to fight with someone on my Instagram that tells me they don’t like my outfit or I should put my butt away. I’m sorry you think I should put my butt away, but just unfollow me.”
Yet, it’s not all declarations and devil may care. Ariel Winter confesses that she too has, in her words, “struggled” with body image: “I really had the greatest opportunity to have some wonderful role models, especially Sofia Vergara,” she said, singling out her ‘Modern Family’ costar.
She went on to say, “Working with a curvy beautiful woman that everybody looked up to and loved the way she looked… that was my inspiration to move forward and accept myself because that’s what matters.”
It’s not the first time Ariel Winter has been the center of such manufactured social media “controversy.” It was last year when she was just 17, that a seemingly innocent pic of herself in a bikini flanked by her nieces became a magnet for trolls.
She finally pushed back, speaking up on behalf of others who are bullied online or at school, saying in part, “You are not asking for anything because of what you are wearing- you are expressing yourself and don’t you ever think you deserve the negativity as the consequence to what you are wearing.” She went on to encourage, saying, “Celebrate you and don’t let anyone’s comments allow you to think less of yourself.” (You can see it here).
And to think a few pics could cause such an uproar. You can see some of the “racy” Instagram pics that Ariel Winter, bravely — since that seems to be what’s required these days — has been posting.
